When I started researching where to stay in Helsinki, I kept running into the same dilemma. Most of the hotels in the city center looked perfectly nice, but they also felt interchangeable. Modern rooms, good locations, decent reviews, but nothing that made me excited to book them. Then I came across Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa.
At first glance, the hotel stood out because of its location. Instead of sitting among office buildings and shopping streets, it occupies a waterfront property in Helsinki’s Munkkiniemi district, about 15 minutes from the city center by tram. The photos looked completely different from the typical city hotel experience, and after a week of comparing options, we decided to give it a shot.
After spending several days there in late April, I can honestly say it was one of the best hotel decisions we made during our trip to Finland.

A Hotel With Actual History
One thing I didn’t realize before arriving is that Kalastajatorppa isn’t just another Hilton property. Long before it became part of the Hilton brand, the site was already a well-known destination in Helsinki. The name “Kalastajatorppa” roughly translates to “Fisherman’s Croft,” a nod to the small fishing cottage that originally occupied the area centuries ago.
The location eventually became home to a restaurant that gained popularity among Helsinki residents, and over time it evolved into one of Finland’s best-known hospitality properties. The current hotel dates back to the 1960s and has hosted everyone from politicians and diplomats to celebrities and international guests visiting the Finnish capital.
Even today, the property feels different from a standard business hotel. There’s a sense that the hotel belongs here. It feels connected to the neighborhood and the shoreline rather than simply occupying a convenient piece of real estate.
Why the Location Worked So Well
If you’re visiting Helsinki for the first time, staying outside the city center might sound like a mistake. I had the same concern. In reality, it ended up being one of the biggest advantages of staying here.
The tram stop is only a short walk from the hotel, and Helsinki’s public transportation system is excellent. Most days we were downtown in less than twenty minutes, exploring places like Senate Square, Helsinki Cathedral, Market Square, and the Design District.
What I liked was being able to experience two different sides of Helsinki. During the day, we had easy access to all of the major attractions. In the evenings, we returned to an area that felt much more residential and local. Walking through Munkkiniemi gave us a glimpse of everyday life in Helsinki that we probably wouldn’t have experienced if we had stayed directly in the tourist center.
The neighborhood itself is beautiful, especially in spring. Late April felt like Helsinki was waking up after winter. People were out walking their dogs, cyclists were returning to the paths, and outdoor terraces were beginning to fill up whenever the sun appeared.
Our Room and the Waterfront IGLUX Experience
We booked a room overlooking the water. The room itself was exactly what you’d expect from an upper-tier Hilton property. Comfortable bed, modern bathroom, plenty of space, and large windows that let in a lot of natural light. But the reason I wanted to write about this hotel in the first place is the waterfront IGLUX experience, which we got on top of our regular room. FYI: IGLUX is Finland’s way of combining the words “igloo” and “luxury” but you will see me say just “igloo” in this blog at times.
During our stay, we also had access to one of the hotel’s private igloos located directly on the shoreline. If you’re picturing a small decorative dome for taking photos, that’s not what this is. The IGLUX is a fully functional accommodation space with its own bed and private toilet, allowing guests to actually spend the night right on the water. It feels more like a tiny waterfront cabin than a hotel amenity. It’s worth noting there is no shower in these, but you have a full bathroom in the regular hotel room you get when you book the IGLUX stay – you essentially have two places to sleep when you book this: one in the IGLUX, and one in the regular hotel (photos below of both).
Walking out to it for the first time was easily one of the coolest moments. The structure sits separately from the main building, giving it a completely different atmosphere. Inside, everything is designed around the view. You can relax, watch the changing light over the water, and experience a side of Helsinki that most visitors never get to see.
Spending a night in the IGLUX became one of the most unique parts of our Finland trip.
Exploring Helsinki During the Day
One of the reasons I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again is that it never felt inconvenient. Every morning we’d grab breakfast, head into the city, and spend the day exploring.
Helsinki is a surprisingly walkable city, and we packed a lot into our itinerary. We visited the city’s famous churches, wandered through the market halls, spent time in the Design District, and explored several museums. Because the tram system was so reliable, returning to the hotel is very easy, and if you prefer to use a rideshare or taxi, the drive is just as fast and convenient as the tram.
In fact, after spending all day around the busier parts of the city, I often looked forward to the ride back. It gave us a chance to see different neighborhoods and experience more of Helsinki than we would have otherwise.
Dining at Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa
One thing that pleasantly surprised us during our stay was the quality of the food. Hotel restaurants can sometimes feel like an afterthought, especially when you’re staying in a city with plenty of dining options, but that definitely wasn’t the case here.
We ended up eating at the hotel more than once, partly because it was convenient after a full day of exploring Helsinki, but also because the meals were genuinely good. The menu leans into Nordic and Finnish flavors while still offering enough variety for international travelers, and everything we ordered felt thoughtfully prepared rather than simply designed to satisfy hotel guests.
The standout dish for me was the fish soup, a classic Finnish favorite. It arrived with generous pieces of fresh salmon in a rich, creamy broth flavored with dill, one of the herbs you’ll find used throughout Finnish cuisine. The combination was simple but incredibly satisfying, especially after spending the day walking around the city in the cool spring weather. It was the kind of dish that perfectly captures why Nordic food is often at its best when it focuses on fresh ingredients and traditional recipes rather than unnecessary complexity.
Beyond the food itself, the restaurant benefits from the same waterfront setting that makes the rest of the hotel so appealing. Sitting down for dinner while looking out across the shoreline felt distinctly Finnish and added to the overall experience. Whether you’re grabbing breakfast before heading into the city or enjoying a relaxed dinner in the evening, the restaurant is more than just a convenient option—it’s a worthwhile part of the stay in its own right.
Hotel Amenities and Overall Experience
Beyond the waterfront setting and the unique IGLUX experience, Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa excels at the things that often matter most during a trip. The rooms were comfortable, the property was well maintained, and the staff were consistently friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Everything felt polished and efficient without ever feeling impersonal.
The hotel also offers a range of amenities, including a fitness center, swimming facilities, meeting spaces, and on-site dining, making it a good fit for a variety of travelers. During our stay, we noticed a mix of couples, families, business travelers, and international visitors, which gave the hotel a welcoming atmosphere. Whether guests were heading into Helsinki for a day of sightseeing or simply enjoying the property, the hotel felt relaxed, comfortable, and easy to settle into from the moment we arrived.
Is Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa Worth It?
For me, absolutely. If your only goal is to stay as close as possible to Helsinki Central Station, there are plenty of hotels that will put you directly in the middle of the city.
But if you want a hotel that offers something beyond location, Kalastajatorppa is worth considering.
The history gives the property character. The neighborhood offers a different perspective of Helsinki. The hotel’s close proximity to the downtown makes getting around easy. The restaurant serves genuinely good food. And the waterfront igloo provides an experience that’s difficult to find anywhere else in the city. Looking back on our trip, it’s one of those hotels that became part of the destination rather than simply a place to sleep.
