These are the three main areas visitors consider, and all are easily accessible via Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), which serves as the primary airport for the region.
Southwest Florida has evolved from a primarily seasonal destination into a year-round travel spot with a mix of beaches, dining, shopping, and outdoor activities. Whether you are planning a relaxing beach vacation, a luxury getaway, or a trip with multiple stops, each area offers something slightly different.

Fort Myers: Best for First-Time Visitors and Convenience
Fort Myers is often considered the best place to stay in Southwest Florida for first-time visitors because of its location, accessibility, and variety of things to do. It is closest to the airport and provides easy access to nearby areas like Cape Coral and Punta Gorda up north, and Bonita Springs and Naples down south.
Downtown Fort Myers, specifically the River District, has become one of the most walkable and active areas in Southwest Florida. You will find a mix of restaurants, bars, local shops, and waterfront views, making it a great place to spend an evening after a day at the beach.
Just south of Fort Myers, Estero is home to Florida Gulf Coast University, which has contributed to a younger energy in the region. Over time, this has led to more dining options, nightlife, and overall activity compared to what the area was traditionally known for.
Fort Myers is also known for its access to beaches and nearby coastal destinations. Fort Myers Beach remains one of the most popular, although it is still recovering from Hurricane Ian. Despite this, it continues to reopen and attract visitors.
Driving along the coast, you will pass Lovers Key State Park, which is one of the most scenic beach areas in Southwest Florida and typically less crowded. There is also a designated dog beach nearby, which is a great option for travelers with pets.

Beyond the beach, Fort Myers offers a mix of cultural and nature-based experiences. Edison and Ford Winter Estates features historic homes, gardens, and museum exhibits, while Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve provides an easy way to experience local wildlife along a scenic boardwalk trail. Just outside the area, Koreshan State Park is a lesser-known stop that blends history and nature. Once home to a utopian settlement in the late 1800s, the park still has preserved buildings, walking trails, and waterfront views along the Estero River, making it a unique place to explore if you’re looking for something different.

Bonita Springs: Best Central Location Between Fort Myers and Naples
Bonita Springs is one of the best places to stay in Southwest Florida if you want a central location. Positioned between Fort Myers and Naples, it allows you to explore multiple areas without needing to move hotels.
Bonita Springs has a quieter, more residential feel compared to Fort Myers and Naples, which makes it appealing if you are looking for a more relaxed stay while still being close to everything.
The beaches in Bonita Springs are some of the most underrated in Southwest Florida. Bonita Beach offers easy access and a classic Gulf Coast beach experience, while Barefoot Beach Preserve provides a more natural setting. As part of a protected preserve, Barefoot Beach is known for its clean shoreline, wildlife, and slightly less crowded atmosphere.
Bonita Springs also has a strong local dining scene. Doc’s Beach House is one of the most iconic beachfront restaurants in the area, while Coconut Jack’s Waterfront Grille offers waterfront dining with seafood and cocktails. If you don’t like seafood like myself, there are plenty of other options!
If you are looking for something beyond the beach, Everglades Wonder Gardens is a unique stop that highlights local wildlife and Florida history.
Where to Stay in Bonita Springs
Bonita Springs has fewer hotels than Naples, but the options available are well-located and offer a more relaxed experience.

Naples and Marco Island: Best for Luxury, Dining, and Resorts
Naples is widely considered the best place to stay in Southwest Florida if you are looking for a more upscale experience. The city is known for luxury resorts, high-end shopping, and well-maintained public spaces.
5th Avenue South is one of the most popular areas in Naples, offering a concentration of restaurants, boutiques, and nightlife. It is one of the best places in Southwest Florida for dining and evening activities. In addition to 5th Avenue South, another popular area to explore is Mercato, which offers a more modern mix of restaurants, bars, and shops. It tends to attract a slightly younger crowd and is a great spot for nightlife, casual dining, or grabbing drinks in the evening.
Naples also has some of the most well-known beaches in the region. Naples Pier is a top spot for sunsets and dolphin sightings, while Vanderbilt Beach and Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park offer a mix of accessible and more natural beach experiences.
For cultural and nature-focused activities, Holocaust Museum & Cohen Education Center provides an educational and meaningful visit. For something outdoors, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, which is managed by the Audubon Society, offers one of the most unique natural experiences in Southwest Florida. The boardwalk takes you through cypress forests and wetlands, where you can spot wildlife like alligators, birds, and native plants, making it a great option if you want to explore a different side of the region beyond the beaches.
Located about 25–30 minutes south of Naples, Marco Island is another excellent place to stay. Marco Island offers a quieter, more resort-focused experience with wide beaches and a slower pace, making it ideal for relaxation and longer stays.
If you are looking for a unique day trip, you can take the ferry from Fort Myers Beach or Marco Island to Key West. This is a popular option for visitors who want to experience the Florida Keys without making the long drive.

Naples offers the largest selection of resorts and hotels in Southwest Florida, particularly for travelers seeking luxury accommodations.

The pool, hot tub, restaurant/bar, gym, etc. are all fantastic on this property, and the rooms are very spacious. The staff was incredible too (our latest stay here was March 2026).

Tips for Visiting Southwest Florida
When planning your trip to Southwest Florida, one of the most important factors to consider is beach access. Parking can fill up quickly, especially during peak travel months, so arriving early in the morning is the best way to secure a spot close to the beach.
It is also helpful to plan for alternative parking options. At locations like Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park, overflow parking areas may require a short walk but still allow access to the beach.
Traffic can also impact your plans, particularly on roads like Tamiami Trail and Old 41. Even short distances can take longer than expected during busy seasons, so it is always a good idea to check navigation apps before heading out.
The best time to visit Southwest Florida is typically between January and April, when the weather is warm and dry. However, this is also peak season. Summer offers fewer crowds and better hotel rates, but comes with higher heat and humidity.
Another thing to be aware of when visiting Southwest Florida beaches is the presence of seaweed along the shoreline, especially during certain times of year. You may notice lines or clusters of reddish or brown seaweed (like what’s shown above) washed up along the water. This is completely normal and often changes day to day depending on tides, wind, and currents.
Some days the beaches are very clear, while other days you may see more buildup. In most cases, it does not impact your ability to enjoy the beach, but it can affect the look of the shoreline and where you choose to set up. Many beaches and resorts will clear it periodically, especially in high-traffic areas, but if you prefer a cleaner shoreline, it can help to check conditions or explore a different beach nearby.
Where Should You Stay in Southwest Florida?
If this is your first time visiting Southwest Florida, Fort Myers is usually the best place to stay due to its convenience and central location. If you want to stay somewhere quieter while still having easy access to multiple areas, Bonita Springs is a great choice. If you are looking for luxury resorts, high-end dining, and a more polished experience, Naples or Marco Island will likely be the best fit.
