Sackets Harbor has always been one of my favorite small towns in New York. I lived there for three years while my husband was stationed at nearby Fort Drum, and even after moving away, I still find myself making the trip back every autumn. While the village is beautiful year-round, this is the season when it truly shines. The colorful leaves, peaceful waterfront, and charming Main Street make it a place I look forward to revisiting every year.

Sackets Harbor at a Glance
- Location: On the shores of Lake Ontario, about 20 minutes from Watertown and 1 hour 15 minutes north of Syracuse. It’s also on the way to the Thousand Islands.
- Best Time to Visit: Year-round is amazing, but fall and summer are my favorite. For peak fall foliage, aim for mid-October (always check the fall foliage maps though in case it is a year the peak is earlier or later).
- How Long to Stay: A full day is perfect, but it’s also a wonderful weekend getaway.

Best Things to Do in Sackets Harbor
One of my favorite things about Sackets Harbor is that you don’t need a packed itinerary to enjoy it. The village is small enough that you can park once and spend the day exploring on foot. Some of my favorite memories are simply wandering down Main Street, browsing the local shops, and making my way toward the waterfront to watch the boats come and go. It’s the kind of place that encourages you to slow down and enjoy the moment.
If you’re interested in history, don’t miss the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site. Even if you’re not someone who typically seeks out historical attractions, it’s well worth a visit. The scenic grounds overlook Lake Ontario, and in the fall, the colorful trees make the walking paths even more beautiful. You’ll also learn about Sackets Harbor’s important role during the War of 1812, when it served as one of the country’s most significant naval and military bases. For an even deeper look into the village’s past, stop by the Sackets Harbor Historical Society. Its exhibits highlight the area’s rich military heritage and the people who helped shape this historic waterfront community.
It’s also worth visiting Pike Road and Brady Road (not downtown but still walkable) surrounding the Parade Grounds. You’ll find historic military housing, monuments, old buildings, and more. These roads are also not far from key historic burial sites like the Sackets Harbor Military Cemetery and Lakeside Cemetery, which preserve local pioneers and War of 1812 figures.
While you’re downtown, take your time exploring the locally owned businesses along Main Street. One of my favorite stops is Junk in the Trunk, an antique shop filled with vintage treasures, unique home décor, and one-of-a-kind finds. Even if you’re not looking for anything specific, it’s a fun place to browse and you never know what you’ll discover.
If you’re visiting during the fall, I also recommend making the short drive to Old McDonald’s Farm, located just outside the village. It’s one of the area’s most popular family attractions and offers plenty to do, whether you’re traveling with kids or simply love everything about the season. You’ll find farm animals, hayrides, mini golf, a giant bounce pad, a pumpkin patch, a corn maze, and plenty of opportunities to take beautiful fall photos.
Where to Eat
If I could recommend only one restaurant in Sackets Harbor, it would be Tin Pan Galley. Even years after moving away, it’s still my favorite brunch spot anywhere. My go-to order is the stuffed French toast, but if you can’t decide between sweet and savory, order a single slice on the side with one of their brunch entrées. During the fall, I also love pairing brunch with one of their seasonal mimosas before heading out to explore the village. As of right now, they’re only open Wednesday-Sunday, but be sure to check their hours before you go. They used to close in the winter.
Before you begin exploring Main Street, stop by Chrissy Beanz Bakery & Café for a specialty latte or fresh pastry. It’s the perfect place to start your morning and fuel up before a day of shopping and sightseeing.
If you’re in the mood for pizza, Goodfellos is always one of my go-to recommendations. It’s the kind of casual restaurant that’s perfect after a day of exploring and one I still enjoy visiting whenever I’m back in town. If you happen to be there on a Wednesday, they have half-priced bottles of house wine!
For dinner, consider The Barracks Inn Restaurant & Bar, 1812 Brewing, or The Boathouse. All are great options, but I prefer 1812 or Boathouse since they are still downtown and right over the water. You can’t go wrong with any place though – you will still be overlooking Lake Ontario at each location!
Where to Stay
During one of my recent trips back to Sackets Harbor, I stayed at Harbor House Inn, and I was honestly impressed by how nice the rooms were. They were much more updated than I expected, everything was clean and comfortable, and the location couldn’t have been better. Since it’s within walking distance of downtown, I parked my car once and was able to explore the restaurants, shops, and waterfront on foot.
Check the Event Calendar Before You Visit
One thing I always recommend before visiting Sackets Harbor is checking the village’s event calendar. For such a small community, there’s almost always something happening throughout the year, from farmers markets and live music to seasonal festivals and historical events.
One of the biggest annual celebrations is the Can-Am Festival, which celebrates the friendship between the United States and Canada with a parade, food vendors, live entertainment, fireworks, and family-friendly activities. No matter what time of year you’re visiting, it’s worth checking the calendar to see what’s happening during your stay.

While Sackets Harbor is absolutely worth a day trip, it’s also easy to turn your visit into a relaxing weekend getaway. If you have extra time, nearby Clayton and the beautiful Thousand Islands are less than an hour away and pair perfectly with a visit to Sackets Harbor. That said, I think Sackets Harbor deserves its own day. You’ll want plenty of time to wander Main Street, browse the shops, enjoy a leisurely brunch, and soak in the peaceful waterfront without feeling rushed. You never want to miss a sunset here either!
Final Thoughts on Sackets Harbor in the Fall
I’ve been lucky enough to experience Sackets Harbor as both a resident and a visitor, and it’s still one of my favorite places to return to every fall. There’s something special about grabbing brunch at Tin Pan Galley, sipping a coffee from Chrissy Beanz, wandering through downtown, and watching the leaves change along the shores of Lake Ontario.
