There’s something magical about fall in Central New York. As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, Syracuse comes alive with pumpkin patches, apple orchards, scenic hikes, fall foliage, and Halloween attractions. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or you’re lucky enough to call the area home, there are plenty of ways to make the most of the season.
From colorful foliage and historic villages to haunted houses and local farms, here are some of my favorite fall things to do in and around Syracuse (and all places I’ve actually been)!

Experience the Best of Fall at Syracuse’s Farms & Orchards
Tim’s Pumpkin Patch
No Syracuse fall is complete without a visit to Tim’s Pumpkin Patch. This family favorite has everything you could want for a classic autumn day, including pumpkin picking, hayrides, corn mazes, farm animals, delicious baked goods, and plenty of seasonal treats. If you’re visiting on a weekend, plan to arrive right when they open. It’s one of the area’s most popular fall attractions and fills up quickly during October.
Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards
Another Central New York tradition, Beak & Skiff offers much more than apple picking. Spend the day wandering the orchards, browsing the country store, enjoying fresh cider donuts, sampling products from the bakery, or relaxing with a drink from 1911 Established Distillery. Like Tim’s Pumpkin Patch, weekends can be extremely busy, so arriving early will make for a much more enjoyable visit.
Pumpkin Hollow
Looking for a quieter pumpkin patch experience? Pumpkin Hollow is a great alternative for families looking to enjoy pumpkins, hayrides, and fall decorations without some of the larger crowds. Unlike Beak & Skiff, alcoholic beverages aren’t available here, making it a great choice if you’re simply looking for a traditional fall outing. You’ll still have a lot of treats and apple cider to choose from.
Crazy Daisies
After a day of pumpkin picking and apple orchards, head over to Crazy Daisies to relax with seasonal food, creative fall drinks, and beautiful outdoor seating. Whether you’re looking for a festive cocktail, warm cider, or one of their rotating seasonal menu items, it’s the perfect place to unwind while soaking up the fall atmosphere. Live music is often offered throughout the season, making it a fun stop for couples, families, and groups of friends.
Local Tip: Tim’s Pumpkin Patch, Beak & Skiff, Pumpkin Hollow, and Crazy Daisies are all pet friendly, making it easy to include your four-legged travel companion in your fall adventures. Just be sure to keep your pup leashed and follow each location’s current pet policies.

Green Lakes State Park
Known for its stunning turquoise lakes, Green Lakes State Park becomes even more beautiful during the fall months. Walking the trails around the lakes while surrounded by colorful foliage is one of our favorite autumn activities near Syracuse. Bring your camera—this is easily one of the most photogenic spots in Central New York.
Walk the Erie Canal Trail
Just a short drive from Green Lakes, the historic Erie Canal Trail offers a peaceful place to walk, bike, or simply enjoy the changing leaves. If you’re already spending the morning at Green Lakes, combining the two makes for an easy and relaxing half-day adventure.
Spend the Day in Skaneateles
One of the prettiest villages in New York, Skaneateles is especially charming during the fall. Browse locally owned boutiques, grab a warm drink, enjoy lunch overlooking the lake, and spend the afternoon strolling through one of Central New York’s most picturesque downtowns.
Stroll Through Syracuse University and Attend a Football Game
One of our favorite places to enjoy fall colors in Syracuse is the Syracuse University campus. As the leaves begin to change, the historic buildings, brick walkways, and tree-lined paths create one of the prettiest spots in the city for an afternoon stroll.
While on campus, take some time to explore the Quad, admire iconic landmarks like the Hall of Languages and Crouse College, or simply enjoy the beautiful campus atmosphere. If you’re visiting on a football game day, you’ll also get to experience the excitement and energy that comes with Orange football in the fall. If you have time, stop by one of the nearby cafés or restaurants in the University Hill neighborhood before continuing your Syracuse adventure.
Hike to Salmon River Falls & Experience the Salmon Run
Located about an hour north of Syracuse, Salmon River Falls makes for a beautiful fall day trip. A short walk from the parking area leads to scenic overlooks of the 110-foot waterfall, while those looking for a little more adventure can take the Gorge Trail to the base of the falls or continue along the Upper Falls Trail through the surrounding forest.
If you’re visiting in late September or early October, pair your hike with a stop along the nearby Salmon River to experience the annual salmon run. Each fall, thousands of Chinook and Coho salmon make their way upstream from Lake Ontario to spawn, creating one of the region’s most unique natural events. Even if you’re not an angler, it’s incredible to watch these massive fish navigate the rushing water.
Take a Scenic Drive to the Adirondacks
If you don’t mind a road trip, the Adirondacks offer some of New York’s most spectacular fall foliage. Just keep in mind that peak colors typically arrive much earlier there than they do around Syracuse, so plan accordingly if you’re hoping to catch the brightest leaves. Lake Placid and Old Forge are also great places to visit, depending on where in the Adirondacks you go.
Get Ready for Halloween
Demon Acres
If haunted attractions are more your speed, Demon Acres is consistently considered one of the best haunted attractions in New York. Expect detailed sets, impressive actors, and plenty of scares. It’s not recommended for younger children or anyone who doesn’t enjoy being frightened.
Fright Nights at the New York State Fairgrounds
Every fall, the New York State Fairgrounds transform into Fright Nights, featuring haunted houses, outdoor scare zones, food vendors, and plenty of Halloween fun. Whether you’re visiting with friends or looking for a spooky date night, it’s one of the area’s most popular seasonal attractions.
Explore Syracuse’s Haunted History
If you’d rather experience real history than jump scares, the Syracuse area is filled with fascinating—and reportedly haunted—locations. The Haunted History Trail of New York State highlights several spooky stops throughout Central New York, making it easy to build your own haunted road trip. You can explore historic cemeteries, haunted inns, eerie landmarks, and other spine-chilling locations throughout the region.
Extend Your Fall Getaway
Visit Historic Sackets Harbor
If you have an extra day, consider heading north to Sackets Harbor. Located on the shores of Lake Ontario, this charming waterfront village offers beautiful fall scenery, historic sites, boutique shopping, and excellent restaurants.
