What My Dog Taught Me About Travel and Resilience

Some of the greatest lessons I’ve learned about adventure, resilience, and making the most of life didn’t come from my own travels. They came from a dog named Bob.

Bob’s Story

Bob’s story began in Clarksville, Tennessee, where he was living as a stray when he was hit by a car. His hind legs were completely broken, leaving him dragging them behind him as he struggled to walk. Thankfully, my sister Gretchen happened to be driving by and rescued him. Animal control initially wanted to leave him in pain and eventually euthanize him, but with my mom’s help, my sister was able to adopt Bob and give him a second chance at life.

Bob underwent surgery and had metal supports placed in his legs, forever leaving him with straight hind legs. Initially, he faced challenges adjusting to his new legs, including doing his famous handstands when he would eat and drink because of the imbalance in his body! Eventually, he regained his strength and began living life like any other dog.

And what a life he lived!

Bob’s Resilience

Despite his disability, Bob lived a long, incredible life that any dog would dream of. He traveled across the country too many times to count (he visited more national parks than I have!), flew First Class, spent some time at college with me at St. Bonaventure University, went hiking, and experienced countless other adventures. Not to mention, he was always one of the fastest runners at the dog park!

Bob was living proof that a disability didn’t have to define what he could experience. Whether he was exploring a new hiking trail, visiting another national park, or simply enjoying the journey, he never let his physical limitations stop him from experiencing the world.

Over the last decade of his life, my brother Eric took Bob in and helped him live his best, longest life. Alongside his best friend, Poppy, the two were inseparable.

When Bob crossed the Rainbow Bridge, he left our hearts broken but full of gratitude for the 15 wonderful years we had with him. We believe he was around 20 years old, which is truly remarkable!

I am forever grateful to my brother, sister, and mom for saving Bob’s life and allowing so many of us to experience and cherish the incredible spirit he embodied.

So, Why Am I Writing About Bob on a Travel Blog?

Because Bob’s life reminds us that adventure is a state of mind, not just a destination.

He traveled more than most of us, not just across the country but through unimaginable challenges. And through it all, he continued living life to the fullest.

Travel isn’t always about checking destinations off a bucket list or planning the perfect vacation. Sometimes, it’s about embracing new experiences, overcoming obstacles, and appreciating the journey along the way. And Bob certainly knew how to do all three.

Three Lessons Bob Taught Me About Travel and Life

1. Don’t let life’s hardships prevent you from living yours.

Bob faced challenges that many would find insurmountable, yet he went on to thrive. His story is a reminder that obstacles don’t have to define our experiences or prevent us from pursuing adventures.

2. Travel as many places as you can.

Whether it was hiking trails, national parks, or First Class flights, Bob never stopped exploring. His life reminds me that there’s so much of the world to experience, and we should take advantage of every opportunity to see it.

3. Always have a good attitude.

Bob had already survived some of the worst days imaginable, but that never stopped him from enjoying the good ones. Life won’t always go as planned, and neither will travel. But sometimes the best thing we can do is keep moving forward, embrace the unexpected, and make the most of the journey.

Bob will always remind us to make the most of life, travel far, and never lose our sense of adventure.

Until we meet again, Bob! 🌈
